Thoughts on Otakon… (ignore previous posts, obviously. Tumblr Bot on AIM isn’t very user-friendly, here I thought it’d pop up a menu or something…) So I’m thinking back to the first Otakon I went to - it feels so long ago, and it was. I was so young then, in the group I went with I was far and away the child… we all gave ourselves nick names in the group, you know, The Brains, The Brawn, The Looks. I was The Spirit. I liked that. I think it may have had a special impact on me without knowing it. Anyway, it was such a big deal to me back in the day. Every sign I saw for ‘Oakton, VA’ I read as Otakon and would get all excited. It sort of ran my life - but then I started getting involved with working for the smaller cons, which was a much more enjoyable expirience. Then I started getting into music festivals like Bonnaroo and that sort of replaced Otakon as my summer mecca. Now I go to Otakon every year for business reasons - I have to connect with the dealers for my dealers room at Anime USA, I’m working for one of the dealers this year, I do music networking at the raves which aren’t really that awesome anymore (or maybe they never were and my standards just rose…) It’s just weird to be so nonchalant about leaving tomorrow for an event that used to make my panties wet, if you can excuse the vulgar terminology. I guess that’s growing up in a nutshell - in time, all novelty/specialness simply fades away. Thanks, entropy. … I mean it.
